Sports
St John's is lucky enough to have some great sports facilities. John's sports fields cover some 28 acres and consist of a pavilion, two soccer pitches, a rugby pitch, a grass hockey pitch and a lacrosse pitch. In summer there is a cricket square, a volley ball court, croquet lawn and two cricket nets. There are also eight grass tennis courts, four astroturf tennis courts (also used for hockey and netball training), two black top tennis courts (also used for basketball and netball), and three squash courts.
St John's offers a wide range of sports, and you can take up the opportunity of representing the College at a variety of levels, or you may choose to use the sports facilities simply for recreation. The College sports teams always enjoy a lot of success in College Leagues, and many members of College represent the University of Cambridge in a variety of University Sports. If you feel that your sport is missing, there is always the opportunity to start up a club yourself!

The St John's College boat club is called the 'The Lady Margaret Boat Club', named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, who founded the College in 1511. It is one of the largest and most consistently successful boat clubs in the University with a recently improved and extended boat house. Many Undergraduates and Graduates learn to row during their time at St John's and represent the College in races both on, and off the River Cam.

Contact: Hannah Wells, hew32
St John's are one of the most successful women's teams of recent years, winning cuppers last year and the league in 2006/7. We always need new players and since most of the team consists of people who had never played before coming to Cambridge, we can safely say no experience is necessary! Come and give it a go, meet the team and our wonderful new coaches and at the very least join us for the socials!
St John's Badminton
Contacts: Nick Jenkins, naj28, (Men's), Emma Macalister-Hall, em407, (Women's.)
St John's Badminton Club organises teams for the inter-collegiate league
and Cuppers competitions. Traditionally we have been able to put out three
men's teams and two women's teams and usually we do very well, with both
first teams in the top league divisions. All levels of player including
beginners are welcome and the teams are spread evenly through the
divisions, so there is a chance for everyone to play competitively. John's
also has the nicest court in the whole University in the Fisher building,
which we use for practise sessions and can be booked for free by any member
of the college for private games.
St John's Ladies' and Mixed Netball
Contact: Natasha Williams, ncw31 & Dawn Kelly, dmk37
Not just for girls, we also have a mixed team so we need boys too! Both our ladies' and mixed teams have maintained places in the second division of the college leagues, and we hope that we can keep up the good work again this season. Anyone who wants to play, watch, ref, train or even just help arrange the socials, is welcome to come along, even if they have never played before. Feel free to email me if you have any questions or wish to play.
St John's Mixed Table Tennis

We also have a pool pyramid, allowing all abilities to play each other. Anyone interested in joining the pool mailing list, please get in touch via e-mail.
St John's Mixed Cricket
Contact: Jonathan Ariyaratnam, jpa35
The St. John's College Cricket Club welcomes all those interested in playing competetive cricket for the college. The club generally organises both friendly games with local clubs as well as the more serious affair of the inter-collegiate cuppers competition. In recent times the club has been very successful and we will be hoping for further improvements this year. Whilst the matches will take place during Easter term, there will be winter nets during Lent term. These will take place every Sunday from 5-6pm. We welcome all players of any standard/experience, both male and female.
St John's Mixed Lacrosse
Contact: Toby Al-Mugheiry, tsa27
Lacrosse at John's is a great oppurtunity to play a sport which many people would not have played before. We therefore very much welcome anyone of any ability. Last year, we were the Plate winners and performed well in the Cuppers (inter-Collegiate) competition. This year we intend to do even better. Training is once a week but competitions don't start till Lent so plenty of time for practice! Socials, great people and awesome fun guaranteed!
St John's Basketball
Contact: Paloma Navarro Negredo,
Basketball at John's has long but informal tradition. If you wanted to become a great NBA player, you should reconsider studying over the other side of the Atlantic. Nevertheless, we get a maximal two hours of training a week with college renting for us the KK gym and one match a week within the "college league". The club has been usually dominated by grads, but there is always a place for anyone, who can do a lay-up or shoot a three-pointer. Socials and matches with the Netballers are always good fun!
St John's Ultimate Frisbee
Contact: Chris Berrow, cb563
We put out a college team for the first time last year, playing our
own version of 'not quite so' ultimate frisbee. Literally, things can only
get better, so anyone with at least an arm and a leg is welcome to come
play. Anyone with any experience is very welcome.
St John's Waterpolo
Contact: Ernie So,
St. John's College Waterpolo Team is a contstantly growing club, both in numbers and ability. Training is just once a week, and there is a match roughly every 2-3 weeks, plus cuppers in the lent term. Whether you're a
seasoned player or can swim and are interested, all are welcome - do not worry if you've never played before, we'll teach you everything you need to know! Waterpolo is a fast-paced, full-contact sport which will help you to keep fit and meet people all at the same time!
St John's Squash Club

Women's - Julia Hine, jh608
Whether you want to play college matches or just play with friends, sign up to St John's College Squash Club and make the most of the awesome facilities. Believe it or not, St John’s College Hockey Club actually outdates the college. Founded in 1506, the first five years brought such great success that Lady Margaret Beaufort thought it necessary to found a college in our name, honouring the five year undefeated champions. And so St John’s came into existence in 1511. Undefeated ever since, SJCHC have often sought more challenging opponents overseas. Following a royal quest to the barren lands of Ireland, the team returned from a prestigious tournament for hockey and other lesser sports as both champions and “Team of the tournament”. With Mr Kipling and his exceedingly good cakes as our sponsors and half time energy supplement, and the little known secret of a curry in our recovery programs SJCHC are fast becoming pioneers in the world of hockey. With your help, we can continue this rich tradition and bring further success to The Hockey Club. There is not an official Cycling club in St Jonh's but it you want to find out any more about cycling then please get in touch. John's will be entering a team in to the cuppers time trial in lent term so if you are at all interested, let yourself be known! For anyone interested in going out on the road, mountain biking, or cycling at any level just drop me an email! And also consider...

John's has one women's hockey team which has been very successful in the past few years- finishing 4th in the first division and reaching the semi finals of cuppers last season.
